COSRX, a Korean skincare brand, makes Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence for an extra moisturising layer beneath cream. Its appeal is a snail-filtrate essence with a distinctive film-forming texture, not just an unusually large number on the label.
96.3% of what?
COSRX specifies 96.3% snail secretion filtrate. Filtrate is the supplied ingredient; the percentage doesn't mean the bottle contains 96.3% of one purified active molecule. It also isn't a percentage score for effectiveness.
The formula also includes betaine, butylene glycol, sodium hyaluronate, allantoin and panthenol. Sodium hyaluronate and betaine help bind water; panthenol supports moisturisation, and allantoin is used for skin comfort. Snail gets the headline, but these familiar ingredients help explain what the essence does.
The appeal is a moisturising layer with a slightly film-forming feel. That can suit a routine where a watery splash feels too brief but another rich cream would be excessive. If you dislike a stretchy or slippery product feel, a simpler watery serum is likely to be a more appealing format.
Hydration, marks and scars are different goals
Hydration can make a dry surface look smoother and feel more comfortable. It is a useful reason to use this essence, especially when dry patches make makeup look uneven. COSRX’s product information also presents brand test results for moisture and appearance.
I would not choose Snail 96 as the main answer to acne marks or indented scars. A moisturising film and a softer-looking surface are different from reducing pigment or changing a scar’s structure. For an everyday purchase, judge whether this extra hydration layer is useful and pleasant enough to keep in your routine.
Where it belongs in a routine
Apply a small amount after cleansing and any toner you use, pat it in, then follow with moisturiser. That gives the essence a clear supporting role; it doesn't turn it into the final cream step.
I tend to prefer the longer-lasting feeling of moisture I get from a cream, especially in winter. That is why I would keep an essence in a supporting role: an extra hydration layer before the moisturiser, rather than a reason to remove the cream I already enjoy.
If your existing routine already feels comfortable, the interesting question is whether you want this additional product, not whether a complete K-beauty routine requires snail. If you are deciding between the essence and the cream, our Snail 96 versus Snail 92 guide compares those separate formats.
Snail filtrate is animal-derived. COSRX's sourcing explanation describes its collection as harmless to the snails, but that is a brand sourcing claim, and the product isn't vegan.

Choose Snail 96 for the extra moisture and film-forming texture you want beneath cream. The percentage describes its ingredient composition; it is not a ranking of how much the bottle can transform your skin.
