Start on a dry face, massage gently, then wet your hands and work water into the oil until it turns milky before rinsing. That middle step is the useful place to focus if cleansing oil feels left behind.
ma:nyo is a Korean skincare brand with several cleansing products, including oils, milk and foam. This guide concerns its Pure Cleansing Oil. Cleansing milk and cleansing foam have different directions; the similar names do not turn them into the same first cleanser.
For the 200 ml product linked below, work wet hands over the oil for about 30 seconds until it turns milky, then rinse with lukewarm water. Use enough oil to spread comfortably; an exact pump count is less useful than avoiding friction on the face.
If you choose to follow with a water-based cleanser, our low-pH cleanser guide explains what that label does and does not tell you.
I often remove sunscreen while showering, which is an awkward match for cleansing oil’s dry start: by then my face and hands are already wet. For this format, I would do the oil step before stepping under the water, then add water and rinse. It is a small change in timing, but more useful than trying to make a dry-skin method work halfway through a shower.
A straightforward cleansing sequence
- Apply to a dry face. Use enough oil to spread comfortably without dragging the skin. Begin with clean, dry hands so the water stage happens deliberately afterwards.
- Massage gently. Spread the oil over the areas you are cleansing. More pressure is not part of the listed directions.
- Wet your hands and massage again. The linked listing specifies 30 seconds and the milky change. You are now mixing water into the oil rather than continuing the same dry massage.
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Pay attention to the edges of the face where cleanser can remain, rather than just rinsing the centre.
The oil phase helps loosen oily makeup and sunscreen; emulsifiers let that oil mix with water so you can rinse it away. An emulsifier's presence is therefore about how the cleanser washes off, not an extra skincare benefit to collect.
The point of this sequence is to finish removing the cleanser and what it has lifted. I would spend attention on that transition to water before spending extra minutes on the first massage.
Why this oil can rinse away
The retailer's ingredient list includes soybean and hazelnut oils, but also Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate and Decyl Glucoside, ingredients used in cleansing and emulsifying systems. A formulated cleansing oil is built to mix with water and rinse off; it is a different product from a kitchen oil spread over the face.
The milky appearance is the visible oil-and-water mixture. It is not a signal that blackheads have been extracted or proof that the cleanser has reached deeper into pores. The useful observation is that the oil has moved into its rinse-off stage.
The Pure Soybean Cleansing Oil name may also appear when you search for the product. For the linked Pure Cleansing Oil listing, the relevant order remains dry massage, add water, then rinse. If your own bottle has different directions, follow those.
If a film remains
I would first make sure the water stage happened before the final rinse. Moving straight from oil massage to a quick splash skips the deliberate mixing step in the directions. If you used much more oil than needed, reduce the amount to what spreads comfortably next time, rather than rubbing harder to compensate.
With cleansing oils, I notice a slippery feeling afterwards and prefer to finish with a cleansing gel or foam. That makes the remaining feel less of an issue for me, and sunscreen feels more thoroughly removed. It is my preferred finish, rather than a rule that everyone needs two cleansers. Use a gentle second cleanser if it helps your routine; there is no need to buy the matching foam.
There is also a difference between leftover oil and a product your skin dislikes. The checked list contains hazelnut oil, lavender, orange and tea tree oils, so there are aromatic plant oils in the formula. It is not an unscented plain-oil formula. If use causes redness, itching or irritation, the listing advises stopping and seeking professional advice; longer emulsification is not a solution to that reaction.
Finish the cleanse, rather than chase “grits”
I would not extend the massage to hunt for visible bits of material. What appears during rubbing is not a reliable measure of blackhead removal, and the directions do not ask for a prolonged extraction session. A video can make a long massage look like the main event. Here the useful finish is much simpler: mix in water and rinse.

My practical answer to residue is to get the sequence right first: dry start, deliberate water stage, thorough gentle rinse. Once the cleansing job is done, it is done. You do not need a handful of “grits” to make it count.
