A refill set makes most sense when you already want the next fill. If the free gift is doing most of the persuading, I would buy one bottle first.
That is the distinction I would make when browsing Korean skincare sets: a lower price for a product you will keep using can be useful. A lower price per millilitre for twice as much of an unfamiliar product is a different decision. The spare still has to earn its space.
“Refill” can mean different things
| Pack format | What you are getting | The practical difference |
|---|---|---|
| Bottle plus refill pouch | A main container and product intended to refill it | You need the compatible container and the maker's transfer instructions |
| Two sealed bottles | A spare complete product | The second bottle stays sealed until needed; there is no transfer |
| Cushion plus replacement insert | A refill unit for the compact | The insert must fit that particular compact |
These formats should not be treated as interchangeable. A two-bottle offer may be useful, but it is not automatically a refill system. A replacement cushion insert is not something you pour into the old cushion.
A concrete example is Numbuzin's No.5 Glutathione Vitamin Concentrated Toner 200ml Refill Set at Olive Young Global. Numbuzin is a Korean skincare brand organised around numbered product lines. The full listing name identifies a toner and a refill set, rather than simply “No.5 skincare”.
The linked No.5 set contains a 200ml bottle and a 200ml refill, so its combined usable volume is 400ml. That is the figure I would use for the unit-price comparison. A gift should not be counted as more of the toner.
Compare usable volume, not the gift's headline value
Consider a hypothetical 200ml bottle costing €20 and a 400ml bottle-and-refill set costing €30, before delivery or tax. The single bottle costs €10 per 100ml. The set costs €7.50 per 100ml.
That is a real arithmetic advantage if you use all 400ml. If you use only the first 200ml, you have spent €30 on the amount you actually used, rather than €20. A cheaper unit price needs the extra units to be useful.
I would count a free mini at zero when deciding whether to buy the main product. If I wanted that mini independently, it might be a pleasant extra. Its advertised value would not persuade me to commit to months of toner I had never tried.
For an overseas order, compare the final delivered cost as well. A heavier or more expensive basket can change the saving, and chasing a shipping threshold is a separate decision from choosing a refill.
How long will the spare wait?
Your current bottle gives a more useful clue than the promotion banner. If you are nearly through a product you like and use regularly, the next fill has an obvious purpose. If the first bottle is still mostly full, the spare may be waiting while you discover whether it belongs in the routine at all.
Keep the unopened product's durability date separate from its period after opening. The Irish regulator's cosmetic labelling explanation describes the open-jar symbol as the period for which a product is fit for use after opening. That is not permission to store an unopened backup indefinitely.
Our guide to EXP, MFG and the open-jar symbol shows how to read those limits before buying a backup.
For a pouch, use the manufacturer's directions for the intended bottle. I would not assume that topping up leftover product or transferring it into any attractive container is how that refill is designed to work. A general shopping guide cannot supply a bottle-specific cleaning or transfer method.
Nor would I call a set environmentally better just because one component is a pouch. A meaningful claim would need information about the packaging and its actual use, rather than a guess from the product photograph.

I like the idea of a refill that removes a repeat purchase from the shopping list. The best reason to buy one is that you know where the next fill will go and expect to finish it. When that answer is clear, the discount helps. When it is not, one bottle is enough of a decision.
